Before You Buy a Portable DVD Player

June 1, 2008 by cyberproducts
A great movie can make a long trip go by very easily, especially when flying. Often however, the movie you watch on the small screen at the front of your cabin is edited and interrupted by announcements from the crew about dinner. Have you ever considered taking a portable DVD player with you? With one of these and a good set of headphones, you can enjoy that action flick while everyone else is stuck hearing about the Grand Canyon. Check out our list of recommended features below to help you choose the best portable DVD player.

Dimensions

A portable DVD player can end up feeling like a small brick to some, especially those which have large rechargeable batteries attached to them. While all players tend to run small, weight can vary by several pounds so make sure to check the side of the box before you buy.

Disc Formats Supported

Besides playing standard DVDs, many portable players today can double as CD players as well, eliminating the need to take one extra device on your trip. You should also consider seeing if your player can support CD-R,CD-RW or DVD-R as well, as these do-it-yourself disc formats are becoming popular amongst those who have burners at home.

Fujifilm Finepix Digital Camera

June 1, 2008 by cyberproducts

When electronic manufacturers in general, and camera manufacturers in particular, launch new models in any colour other than black, beige or silver, you know that somewhere along the line from drawing board to store shelf someone whose job title includes the word “marketing” has decided that they need to appeal to a particular type of consumer who they believe isn’t buying enough of their product.

Therefore I have to wonder exactly which section of the community this new Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd is targeted at, because although it may be described as “Raspberry Red” in the brochure, they’re not fooling anyone with that. This camera is pink. Not just pink, in fact, but bright metallic semi-gloss fuchsia pink. After just using it for the past few days I’ve found myself considering a new career in hairdressing. I’ve even thought about buying a New Beetle.

In design as well as décor the Z5fd is born for the clubbing lifestyle. Measuring a trim 92.8 X 55 X 19.4mm and weighing only 148g it’s small and light enough to qualify as ultra-compact, and will slip unobtrusively into a handbag or shirt pocket. When not in use the lens is protected by a sliding cover that doubles as the on/off switch, so it’s not going to be easily damaged if it has a close encounter with your pink Motorola RAZR or the lighter for your menthol cigarettes.

Despite the number in its name, the Z5fd is a 6.3-megapixel model featuring Fuji’s SuperCCD HR sensor, with an internal 3x zoom lens and a high-resolution 230k pixel 2.5-in LCD monitor. It is available in a slightly more butch silver or a positively macho “mocha brown” as well as the eye-catching colour of my test sample.

The sliding cover design isn’t as popular as it used to be, but there are a few similar models around, such as the Samsung Digimax i70 (£179), the new Casio Exilim EX-V7 (£249) and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T50 (£269), although all of these are 7MP models. Other 6MP ultra-compact cameras with internal corner-mounted zooms include the Samsung DigiMax i6 (£144), HP Photosmart R727 (£139) and Photosmart R827 (£199), and the Nikon Coolpix S6 (£179). With a price tag of £189 the Fuji Z5fd finds itself towards the high end of the price range for this type of camera.

How to Buy a Digital Photo Frame

June 1, 2008 by cyberproducts

Plain old picture frames are so last century. After all, they don’t do much more than show off one shot. Snore. Digital photo frames, on the other hand, let you create slide shows with cool transitions to display all of your vacation pics. Some of these handy devices integrate video, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth , and a host of other features, too. The best part? LCD technology is finally becoming affordable enough for these frames to be had at reasonable prices.

If you’re interested in picking up a digital photo frame, you can still consider yourself a pioneer. The product category is relatively nascent, with heavy hitters like Sony and HP taking first stabs at devices. We’ve recently reviewed a bunch of digital photo frames and have found that you can land a great bargain on an excellent one; but you need to know what to look for. So here are our rules for picking the perfect digital picture frame.

Rule 1: Don’t Buy Based on Brand Name Alone

We had high hopes for HP’s first digital photo frame, the df750, for example, so we were surprised to find that the company built it around a dismal LCD riddled with scaling problems that produced jagged, grainy images. This frame also has a hard-to-maneuver menu system making it difficult to recommend.

On the flipside, the lesser-known Pandigital used an excellent display in its 8-inch Pantouch touchscreen-enabled frame that delivered the best images of the bunch. Our tests showed images with terrific color accuracy, and the device offers picture adjustments for brightness, contrast, tint, and color for fine-tuning almost any photo to perfection. The bottom line: Always read reviews before you buy! (And as luck would have it, we’ve listed links to several below.)

Rule 2: Never Settle for Resolution Below 640-by-480 Pixels—No Matter the Price

Rockbottom prices on some frames, such as the $79.99 Cenomax F7024B 7-inch Digital Photo Frame, may deem them mighty attractive, but beware of subpar images. This frame’s resolution of 480-by-234 pixels is too low to display details, so most of its images looks boxy and pixilated—no bargain! Only consider frames with a resolution of 640-by-480 or higher.

Rule 3: Select Your Aspect Ratio

Photo frames typically come in one of two aspect ratios, 4:3 or 15:9. By default, most point-and-shoot digital cameras take photos in 4:3. So a frame with an aspect ratio of 4:3 will be the best fit for your photos, as 15:9 frames will have to crop a piece of the top and bottom of your photos in order to fill the image on the LCD screen. On the other hand, a 15:9 aspect ratio gives your images a pleasing “widescreen” feel, which might be a better bet for some. One of our highest-rated frames, the Sony DPF-V900 9-inch Digital Photo Frame displays in 15:9. That, together with its slick design and intuitive software, makes it look and feel like a mini-HDTV.

Rule 4: Images Are Only Part of the Picture

Superior image quality isn’t the most important feature to everyone. Sure, you want to see your pictures clearly and sharply, but ease of use and additional functionalities are also something to consider. For instance, the Kodak EasyShare EX811 and Pandigital 8-inch PanTouch have easy-to-use menu systems and integrate Wi-Fi, so that you can send pictures to the frame over a home network. In addition, these frames let you view images from online photo sites. Simply set the frame up at your grandparents’ house, upload your pictures to the Web, and your family can see them. For those who want to pass the photos around at parties, the Viewsonic’s DPX702 might do the trick. The frame features an internal battery, which allows up to one hour of cable-free photo viewing.

And there you have it. So start by reading the reviews mentioned below, and be sure to follow our rules as you shop for a digital photo frame.

Asus Eee PC 900

June 1, 2008 by cyberproducts

Few could argue that Asus created something special when it launched the Eee PC last year. The idea of making a truly mobile, yet very affordable mobile computer was welcomed by the Press and consumers in equal measure. Although the Eee PC 4G 701 that Andy reviewed back in October 2007 was a great machine, there were a couple of issues that took away some of the shine. Now however, I have the Eee PC 900 to play with, and it looks as though Asus may have got everything just about perfect this time.

Anyone who’s got a few years under their belt, like myself, will be well aware that the concept of a basic, portable computer with solid state storage and no moving parts is nothing new. About ten years ago I did a significant amount of my writing on a Psion Series 5, which was laughably referred to as a PDA. In the Series 5, Psion created a device so usable, that I was able to write entire features on it while sitting on the train. The company then pushed the boundaries even further when it launched the Series 7 and eventually the NetBook.

What Psion got right with its machines was a balance of essential functionality, small form factor and great battery life. As time moved on, though, fully fledged notebooks became smaller and lighter and end users wanted to run feature rich (read bloated) operating systems on their mobile computers. All this spelled the end for Psion hardware (although it did spin off its EPOC OS as Symbian), and for a long time we simply didn’t see machines like the Series 7 and NetBook. Thankfully Asus realised that there was room in the market for a basic, affordable machine that didn’t need to run the latest version of Windows – thus the Eee PC was born.

For anyone who hasn’t heard of the Eee PC before (where have you been hiding?), let me give you the low down. The Eee PC is a very small machine measuring 225 x 165 x 35mm (WxDxH) and weighing around 1kg. that puts it well and truly into the ultra-portable sector, being lighter than even a Sony TZ31MN, and smaller too. This is a machine built to be used on the move, without the need to make much space for it in your bag. The Eee PC comes in two colours, pearlescent white, like the one I’m reviewing here and black – yes, that does sound very similar to Apple’s MacBook range, but that’s most definitely where the similarities end.
